Cut the rings as straight/cleanly as possible, about 1cm thick each. Get a splash of decent olive-oil (garlic infused is pretty awesome too) an equal splash of water and a generous pinch of sea-salt. Get the pan sizzling and whack them in.
Once the little bit of water has cooked off (and cooked the rings through) turn the heat up to full blast for 30 seconds to lightly caramelise.
