Locks that work

  • No, there's no one I know who ownes one. And evans unfortunately is a little bit too far away from Frankfurt/Germany. :(

It seems there are no pictures out there of the Extreme 59 locked to something, I'd like to see one. Or a comparison with e. g. the M18 or X54.

  • How do pitlocks compare to pinheads, etc.? Are they all much of a muchness or are some brands appreciably more secure?

  • Wanted to buy the Fahg now, but I'm sure it will be too small and I don't want to use the Sheldon locking method as a bad unsafe compromise.

And I need only one lock now because I'll keep my Abus Bordo Granit X Plus.
Thought of a X54 or a NY 3000 due to the price and they're not as heavy as the M18 or the Extreme 59. Otherwise maybe I'll not care about the extra weight, I don't know. I'm still thinking.

  • ive just seen a abus granit london .

I dont know how it compares to the granit 54 but it has same diametre shackle and parabolic shape.

Its a complete waste of time. Avoid it like the plague. Its discussed on this thread already, and suffice be it to say, that it will never make the list.

Pitlocks are the daddy, but the rest are all good deterrents to opportunistic thieves.

Crypter, you could over-think bike security if you let yourself. All the locks in the list are good. Yes, some have a higher level of security than others, but the WAY you lock your bike is very important too, and no lock over 16mm in diameter has been defeated, when locked in the best way. This has to do with the method of locking, and the location. After that, if you have made good choices, then the chances of your bike being stolen have been reduced to the minimum possible. Is the MasterLock StreetForce 10 available in Germany? I like it alot for its slim and long design. That means easy to fill gaps, and enough length for many options of locking to a post.

Are there any alternatives to Pitlocks for normal axels? Something like locking wheel nuts on a car?

  • I'm relatively sure now I'll buy a X 54. It's a very good compromise between security and weight and I also keep my Abus Bordo Granit X Plus as a secondary lock. Or trade it against a Krypto NY maybe but I don't think so at the moment. The X 54 will also be the cheapest solution for me.

Though I'd like to see a picture of an Extreme 59 but I guess nobody ownes one in this forum?

Have a nice day, I'm going to row now.

Edit: Using the Fahg with a Surly 1x1 will only be possible with the Sheldon method, right? But the X 54 should work quite well.
I will buy a X 54 in the 23cm version, now there's the question about the second lock. :/

Pitlock does offer a version for the axles on interal gear hubs. Those might fit normal solid axles as well. Not sure if they offer a solution for the front wheel. But you can just write them an email and ask.

  • Could someone with a Fahg Mini post the internal dimensions of the lock? i.e., the width and length inside the 'D'. I can't find them anywhere (and have found differing sizes for the outside dimensions) and want to check if it'll fit round my road bike rim, tyre and ugly-but-practical mudguard. Thanks!

    SPEC:
    **New York Fahgettaboudit Mini **
    Width = 3.25" (8.3cm),the 'D'
    Length inside 6" (15.3 cm),the 'D'

Shackle Dim (Steel bar only) = 18mm
Shackle Dim with Vinyl covering = 23.9mm

    Don

  • Thanks Don. To confirm, those are the dimensions inside the D? i.e., how much space there is?

Just checking because the general dimensions given for width and height (like on Kryptonite.com) are the same, and I'd assumed they were the overall, outside dimensions. Which would make the inside very Mini indeed!

  • Anyone have an experience with the Hiplock? Any good, comfortable, quality of the velcro?

    Fabius- Sorry for the delay.

The measurments are "INSIDE" diameters and when I checked mine it shows:
    Width = 82.23mm
    Length(At tallest location) 153.19mm

The New York Fahgettaboudit Mini's dims vs. the Evolution Mini-5 dims are as follows:
    NYFU Width = 1.20mm narrower vs. EVMini-5
    NYFU Length = 12.71mm taller vs. EVMini-5

So basically the new York Fahgettaboudit Mini has just a tweak more length really

    Hope this helps - Don

  • Hopefully this is the right thread for this - Discovered today that i can very comfortably carry my M18 in my fabric horse. The fabric horse isn't even the fahg size one but an evo size one. After a few minutes of wearing it, stopped noticing it was there, even though the M18 feels like the weight of a planet when holding it in my hand

  • Anyone have an experience with the Hiplock? Any good, comfortable, quality of the velcro?

Newbie tip for you. On these list pages, page 1 should have all the important information. The rest of the posts will go into more detail.

The Hiplok isn't listed on page one as it isn't deemed secure enough for London as a primary lock.

Info about Hiplok can be found by using the search bar at the top right of every page. Some people like it. A lot of people don't.

  • I ordered an Abus X 54 in the 23cm version today. I hope I will be lucky with it. Secondary lock will be my Bordo Granit X-Plus although it could be a little bit longer for the Surly 1x1. But it should work.

It has already arrived. The plastic shell which covers the lock cylinder feels a bit wobbly, but the lock is on the list and should do its job very well.

  • anyone got any recommendations for lock cable (for wrapping around wheels).

i need something really secure, im currently using a fahg mini D lock.....

    thanks in advance :)

Unfortunately all cables can be snipped with the greatest of ease and are not recommended. If you want the best security – which is what this thread is about – use a D-lock to lock the front wheel and frame to the object and another D-lock to lock the rear wheel and frame to the object. This method will also help prevent damage to the bike as it'll be better secured and more sturdy.

A list of recommended D-locks are on the first page of this thread.

  • I use a Fagh mini at the back and a evo mini for the front. I reckon it's the only way to do it in London. Like HatBeard demonstrates on previous page

  • Hi. I know there's been a few posts already about Pitlocks for solid axles - but I'm new to this forum and looking for some fresh advice from people who actually use them in their bikes already. I also can't start a new thread because of "rules" about being a new member - so sorry for just jumping in the middle of conversation here.

I am in the process of building a very beautiful fixed gear bike and wanted to put pitlocks on front and rear wheels (essentially the most expensive part of the bike). So apparently I have to buy a special M10 Rohloff solid axle pitlock - but got confused by the reviews that it's only suitable with Rohloff axle/hub? Is this true? Have any of you fitted an M10 pitlock to an Ambrosio hub before?

I definitely don't want to carry two D-locks.

Also, I read that you can't really put them on rear wheels because of the horizontal drop-outs. Again, is this true?

Would appreciate any replies from people who use the solid axle pitlocks successfully - and that they will work on any axle/hub - not just a Rohloff? Also any links for best place to buy them. Thank you!

gutted, i really dont wanna have to carry around 2 D locks :(

oh well, id rather have a secure bike....

  • once you're used to carrying the fagheddaboudit mini d adding the mini evo into the mix the weight barely registers.

  • love your bike?

best get to love 2 d-locks.

This, evo mini weighs about half that of the fagh. Pop it in your belt you don't even know it's there... literally.

  • many a time I've sat down quickly somewhere and got a d-lock up the jacksie because I forgot it was on my belt.
