I did read an article that posited that couples average out at a common height- cannot remember what it is, but I think maybe 5'8"?

i.e. we are subconsciously attracted to a partner that when combined with our own height hits that average.

So, take me (6'2") and the Mrs (5'6"), add us together and get 11'8", divide by two and you get 5'9", which is close.

So ... 5'4" and 6'1" averages to 5'8.5"

Not bad! (although, since the back surgery A might be a little taller now!)
