intellectualising for a moment, if postmodern society is characterised by the deconstruction of social institutions and the norms they purport to embody, and all value judgments are undermined by their apparent relativism, except that of consuming, ever present and perpetually reinforced, is it really surprising that those who have not been born into or built themselves a stake in society, willingly participate in an amoral orgy of individualistic consumerism?

Of course not. But who said we live in a post-modern society? Not me!
