  • Not meaning to be rude but there's already a thread about vintage Peugeot conversions. I suggest this thread gets merged with it.

  • Q - I know the frame isn't exactly top quality steel. Are any of the other bits worth much?

Q - Could I simply take off one of the chain rings from the front when converting or do i need a whole new crankset?

Q - I've not tried yet but do you think 700c wheels would fit on this bike?

Q - Any advice on what is a good reasonably priced flip flop hub (fg/ss) that will last?

Q - Any other advice or things i should think about before i start?

The saddle is worth a wee bit. The rest, not so much.

Possibly, yes. Depends on how the rings are mounted.

    Probably.

Not from me, I'm afraid. Classifieds here are often a good deal though.

Keep it within a sensible budget, though you can upgrade parts later (ie. the frame, etc). Borrow tools where possible, unless they are ones you plan to use regularly.

  • Get some foot retention as well mate. That'll make life much easier.

  • if you find the front chainring too large, you'll need a different set of cranks. but assuming the BB is square taper you can get a cheap shimano crankset for about 5-10quid off here I would imagine.
which TBH isn't a bad thing. I used a pair of similar cranks on my SS/suicide fixed conversion and they were so flexible that under hard cranking it would throw the chain off (despite perfect chainline + tension). shit cranks are shit.

    Front Wheel - Mavic Model E 27 x 1 1/4
sounds like you need 27" then, good luck, pretty much the only wheels you'll be able to get in 27" that don't cost a bundle will be cheap screw on dutch bike wheels. You can stick a £5 bmx freewheel on there and re-dish the wheel and that would work fine for SS.
Some fresh grease + cables + outers + brake blocks and she'll be a nice run about. Unless the paint is terrible, don't bother respraying, it takes days and days and rattle can paint isn't very durable. fresh paint will also appeal more to the toe rags.

  • Agree with the obvious comments above: Saddle is a keeper and looks like it will definitely take 700c wheels. Good luck.

  • I've got a pug from 1984,so probably very close to yours,It takes 700c wheels fine
and 57mm drop front brake, rode around on the original chainset for a while, but a 48 tooth
was just too much oop ere int Pennines,Tried the inner ring but 38 teeth had me spinning downhill
like a Jack Russell on speed, ended up changing to a 44 tooth which is more or less perfect

Hope your seatpost is not to short as Pug posts are a weird 24mm o/d

  • sh$ttles. first issue i've run into - the gap between the front forks is 96mm so my plan of buying a couple of cheap 700c wheels may not happen!

sounds like this is common on old french bikes according to sheldon : http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html

  • Give it a squeeze. It's steel after all.

  • Yeah mines the same spacing, just need to spring the legs apart when you fit the wheel
I run a shimano r500 on the front had no issues at all

  • Going to get my old pug back on the road again...

Something just to keep me going until I find a nice classic to replace it. No offence to the Pug lovers, but I want something a little more special.

  • Is anyone pug selling?

Looking for a 59/60 cm frame size full bike thats ready to ride. London based pref.

    Let me know.

  • Give it a squeeze. It's steel after all.

if you do that you need to make sure dropouts are square to each other. otherwise your front wheel might make a break for it. Also if the axles long enough, just throw some washers in there.

  • Don't bin your seatpost as it may be a weird (and impossible to replace size). I think mine was 22.2mm or something.

And yes UTFS as there is pretty good Pug conversion thread on here somewhere.

Hey grim, I cant PM you for some reason

I have the same model Whatnot posted above. Its a full geared bike tho and I just put it in the shop for a bearings change so it wouldnt be frame and and thus i'd prob want a full bike price for it. (Forum discount though)

PM if interested. based in Highgate, North London but if its nice weather when I get my bike out of the shop I can cycle to you for a viewing

Edit. Does anybody know the Standard diameter for Stem size on peugeot bikes is. Is it just 25.4mm trying to measure but I cant take them out ATM to do it

  • hey im a newbie hence why im posting on here. ive just recently bought a peugeot carbolite bike (hopefully ill post some pictures soon). im currently in the process of doing it up. just wondering if anyone has any experience or knows of any links of people who have converted the old school gearing system on the cross bar to the more modern gear shifters in the brake levers. im guessing its not impossible as you should be able to route it along the side the brake cable.

  • oh also if anyone spots any bargain parts let me know. im looking to replace pretty much everything apart from the frame and handle bars. first buy i think will be some brake levers, was going to buy some new ones from chain reaction but would defiantly be interested in some half decent second ones

Fairly easily done. You need to choose what groupset you'd like first, or at least Campag or Shimano.

i like the shamano group set, is there any real difference between Campag or Shimano groupsets? have you got any tips or advice on doing the conversion?

im actually looking for some more updated parts for the bike, but thanks for the heads up. i think i want to keep everything shimano but i could be persuaded otherwise if i find a nice substitute

  • My friends 103 peugeot was hit today, bending his forks in the process.
not totally related, but does anyone know whether the forks he needs to get to replace them would be 1" or 1" 1/8?
    Thanks

  • They'd be 1" forks.

  • Most likely. How old is the bike?

  • if by 103 you mean one of the peugeot carbolite frames then 1" threaded forks will be the order of the day although if he's been hit head on you should probably replace the frame as well. my mate got 2 of the 103 peugeot complete bikes for £30..
