A mate of mine did this a few years ago, and IIRC, he said that transit time depends on sea conditions, ie if the swell (or whatever it is) is against the boat, it can sometimes take a lot longer than normal to get across.
However, I think the record is around 4 days, and anything over a couple of weeks is pretty slow, so if it really did take a couple of months, I would guess Louis must have been on one of those low-tech boats, you know, the flat ones that don't have any sides?
What's the word? Craft?
