I was thinking for the massive orange thing, if I buy, i'd want to put a more reliable lump in than it currently has. The 6.2 D apparently is a bit of an arse at times...

Thinking- put in a nice Landy engine (have a mate who's just built his own defender- incl chassis swap- so thought he might be able to help)
(reduce engine size, increase economy, increase towing ability- the last bit is important).

Do not put in "nice" Landy engine, why do you think all the Landy folk put BMW engines in their cars? Assuming you don't have a burgeoning career as an Arabian oil baron in the works I'd go for a BMW 2.0-3.0l diesel engine. wono't cost an arm and a leg to run and they're great engines which will definitely fit in the orange.

Also because in the last ten years every Mondeo driving arsehole got a little bit of money and upgraded to a BMW there's loads of secondhand ones around for cheap money, easy to pick one up to scavange engine and gearbox from and then flog the remainder for spares.
