The guys with the digital timing stuff seemed pleased that we were getting people away pretty close to the minute as it helped them to spot any anomolies (eg people getting close to the mat with 30 seconds to go and triggering their chip).
One every 30 is fine for the starters, it will need some discipline in lining people up so they do not miss their gate and have enough time to settle before we send them off.
The tdf style countdown is important to get riders into the zone and fire themselvesup. There were some pretty nervous people and a start when ready call might not get people exploding out of the gate with the same dramatic effect (skidding on the mat, pulling their feet out of their pedals, pulling their wheel out of alignment so it jams against the frame etc...). Saying that a few people went on 1 and Andy had a look of death on his face despite knowing how little it mattered because of chip timing.
