cheers for the responses :-) I am already sold on the open pros (rode on a set for quite a while)
I've seen examples of the cd looking quite shit once the brakes have worn down the surface, would rather have normal machined ones in that instance.
The new build is a bit of a 'sunday best' based around a Chesini frame, I think the Ceramics would be the business on there.
If anyone see a good deal on a wheelset or rims let me know.
Cheers!

I have a pair of ceramics & black anodised - both 36h - they are great, as above, use the correct green pads on the ceramics and I haven't noticed anything unsightly on the braking surface of the anodised pair....ftw!

will open pros stand up to being constantly jumped off curbs or is it better to go for something wit h a little more depth?
-

They should be fine if they are well built and curb hopping is the most abuse you're putting them through.
I would go with CXP33 if I wanted loads more strength as they look like Open Pros just deeper.
Or for no braking surface, CXP12 which are just as deep and made the same as CXP33 so very strong.

I wanna get CXP12 for my next wheel set, lots of WIN there.

I wanna get CXP12 for my next wheel set, lots of WIN there.
Do it.
My wheels are Phil HF x CXP12, all silver of course, and I love them.

Been meaning to get a photo of my low pro how it is at the moment, very different from that last picture.

Probably will take one soon before I put the wheels/cranks on my new frame.

Good thread but the one piece of info I'm after isn't here...
Are the CD and ceramic rims the same colour? I've never seen the latter and google images are inconclusive.

• #38
No.
Ceramic are black rims with a grey ceramic braking surface.
CD have a continuous coating of lighter grey anodise. Braking surface will wear off pretty quickly though.

Thanks for that. Appreciated.

Am in the process of having some wheels made (with a SA 2-speed kick back hub) with Op Pro rims - the normal ones, not the ceramics. Having used them before and taken a lot of abuse, I was keen to use them again. Get my vote every time.

It looks very much like Mavic might have discontinued Open Pro ceramic rims for 2012
-
• #43
IIRC they have a new wheel set with a different rim surface and proprietary brake block. Are those rims going to be available without the hubs and spokes.
-
• #44
Exalith is the new coating and no separate rims available. :(
-
• #45
Do I need to buy some spare rims?
Fuuuuuuuuuu
-
• #46
No ceramic option and new graphics being shown on Mavic website and Chainreaction also not listing for new shipment arriving in October.
-
• #47
So do I need to buy up nns (new new stock) rims?

http://www.mavic.com/en/technology/wheels/Exalith
Mavic exclusive technology for Wheel-Tyre System featuring aluminum rims provides a very high level of durability and a unique aesthetic. The Exalith specific treatment penetrates the alloy, so the rim keeps its distinctive anthracite grey color for thousands of kilometers. - Delays rim wear - Specific formulation penetrates into the rim to provide extreme hardness - To be used with special Mavic Exalith brake pads to ensure braking performance and longevity (delivered with the wheels)

I was in Edwardes Cycles earlier- they have bought in a stock of Open Pro Ceramics as they have been advised that no more will be made.

Fuck. I love mine and I was planning on using Open Pro Ceramics for a good while to come....
the ceramic open pros are great, better braking than standard open pros but you do need to use ceramic-specific green pads, which wear quite quickly. also, expect the rims to last twice as long as the regulars, provided you don't chip the ceramic surface. no metal fragments lodged in the brake pads either.
only come in 32h though, I think?
