But Roy is also typical of the way French teams operate in the Tour; desperate to find a hero that the public will cheer for even if they win nothing. The attacks are, in a good way, a publicity stunt. For near on 20 years this was the best that clean French riders could hope for but now that things have changed maybe we will start to see greater ambition and greater cunning from them. Though probably not.
It's also worth saying that these riders - Roy, Hoogerland etc - are not just riding for glory. They stand to double their annual salary at the post-tour criteriums where the plucky losers, the crash victims and other minor riders with a story to tell, are all part of the show.
