It will work, just concentrate on getting a good pair of brakes as they make the biggest difference.
To be honest I can't really feel any difference between the machined sidewall and non-machined one.
There are so many claim to why we have it, some says it to reduced the braking noise, some says it's simply done to smooth out imperfection, and of course some says it's to improve braking performance.
