    Newspapers are dying, the people who run them are desperate to sell more copies (or even just sell the same number they were last year), the owners lean on the editors and publisher, the editors want to keep their jobs, they put the squeeze on the journalists and ... ta da.. People generally don't get into journalism to become tabloid whores.
