  • Is the bit in the middle sticking up (as Dimi3 is assuming) or is it a dimple going into the bolt?

    I'm struggling with the perspective...

  • not assuming, knowing for fact

was thinking, that someone was in touch with BCH. what was the outcome?

  • Is there any such thing as a semi-official or at least recommended route and if so a GPX file / online route to follow for the garminators? Waypoints even?

I made a pretty spot-on one for last year that took in the revised feed stop that confused a lot of people, I won't link to it until I've had a look at where things are this year for fear of directing anyone the wrong way. I will be doing a revised one for this year.

  • BCH? Barclays Cycle Hire? heard nothing from them or TFL.

Think I have one of those though. (allen key with hole.) just whether its the right size or not...

  • something like one of these?

  • I can see this bike just stopping dead when you get to the M25, like the trolleys where the wheels lock up if you try to take them past the Wedlock-esque IR barrier.

  • I think you're delightfully bonkers to be doing this ride on a hire bike, econodog, and I am full of admiration. Please, please don't take it the wrong way, though, if I wonder out loud whether it would carry quite the same heroic status if you put a sensible saddle on the bike. Is that very wrong of me?

it's not wrong of you to think that at all. it just depends on what i value more: my testicles or what you said

Also can the person doing it on a boris bike please attach a computer? I'd love to come back and read things like average speed, top speed etc.

i have an iphone but won't be recording this as it rinses the battery. if some wants to lend me a garmin or something i'd happily do it.

    what jaitch said

YES! i think so — does it say on the side the size?

  • I stand corrected ;-)

  • size? umm... i dont know. they havent arrived yet and probably wont until just before the ride probably...its an unusual addition to my toolbox. mine cost 4.99 on ebay.

  • I have 1 spare train ticket for sale if anyone is interested.

I bought some on a group-save because I was planning to continue riding in the morning(after breakfast) to Lowestoft(30KM) check out the scenery and have a hearty lunch.
One of us couldn't make it.
The ticket is £11 and valid from Lowestoft.

  • Is anyone doing this brakeless? I only have one bike and it isn't drilled for brakes.

  • You have a week to make a clamp-on brake, drill a hole, or htfu!

Vello made a marvellous clamp on rear brake for his track bike for riding it to the track.

just found in toolbox. the exact set you have in your photos.

i'll go over → there now.

  • Just came back from a ride on unlit country roads using a Smart Lunar 35 Lux front light, with my cousin riding alongside using a Cateye EL530. We were only able to see maybe 20 metres ahead, which restricted us to around 17-18 mph (as a guess). My worry is that it may be a bit sketchy descending any hills, fixed, at night - with limited capacity to see ahead. Is this a problem, or should I just HTFU/ invest in a stronger light?

  • Its probably fine. Hope for a moonlit cloudless night and remember there will be many others pointing their lights in the same direction...

Ha! So...when I said someone will probably have one...you are someone and I claim my £1.

    i might be interested.

    only joking.

if I go mad I might be in, but then I will pay the full price and I don't mind, but the chance is very slim.

No, just ride more slowly--night rides are not designed to be raced. Why would 17-18mph not be fast enough? You don't need a huge front light for night riding. If you pay attention, your safety won't be compromised. If you're riding in a larger group, there's bound to be someone with an extremely bright light just behind you, anyway. The main thing to anticipate is being blinded by the headlights of oncoming cars and temporarily not seeing anything, so slow down when cars approach.

As for descending hills fixed, there are no really difficult downhills on the Dynamo except for one that comes when it should already be light (although it's mostly just me who finds it difficult). That one is very tight and usually quite gravelly. There are a couple of fast downhills, but they are mostly pretty straight, and the run-in to Sudbury is additionally well-lit.

  • Please circulate the following far and wide...

On the road to Dunwich, remind yourselves and fellow riders not to make unwelcome noise in villages, not to drop litter and to offer help to anyone in difficulty.

    See you next week...:)

  • alex - ok i'll holler a reminder to be considerate on repeat as i go along.

haran - everyone will be sharing light pools of a few people. and as oliver says, 17mph is plenty, it's quite a long way to go any quicker (no doubt some will)

  • The bike I was planning on bringing, earlier;

  • @Tom. Hope you're alrite, that it isn't crash damage. I 'spose it's "better" it happened a week before not during !

  • How on earth did you mange that one?
