  • Critical mass virgin, what to expect on the ride? What to pack for the ride? How long does it usually last? How to deal with arsy drivers? Police do they get involved much?

    Any advise, tips, sugestions welcome.

  • don't

    go

  • Bring bike.

  • it's not for weeks, no?

pack? it's not a long ride really. take lights. can never go wrong with snacks/beer but you won't need it for fuel. police in my experience don't get involved but i've never done it london. i've corked police cars before, keeping them where they are when they have a green light because i didn't consider it safe to let them move

  • drive to closest parking out of sight, unload bike, ride, load bike, drive home

  • don't

    go

    this

  • Pack: a peanut butter sandwich, compass, comic books, tube of lubricant.

  • And a turbo trainer to warm up on beforehand.

  • I no its on last friday of each month. Just another excuse to ride my bike. Not that i need one. But to ride with a few hundred people might be nice.

  • don't

    go

    ^

  • Actually to be fair, the first couple are always a thrill. Just remember, if you're riding a FIXIE, don't stop pedalling!

  • ^True, I went on two I think, just to check that it was as bad as I first thought.

  • whats critical mass? sounds good.

A lot of people who have posted here^ seem to enjoy hating on CM.

I recommend you just go with the flow. It's nice to go with a pal, pretty tricky not to lose them. Don't worry about the rozzers - generally they ignore CM, or just ride alongside and help it along if they do turn up.

Be aware that if you choose to cork incoming traffic, it can put you in the firing line from some aggressive drivers, if you're not sure hang back.

Remember this: If you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong.

  • whats critical mass? sounds good.

It's an opportunity for cyclists to make 100% sure that they are hated by peds and motorists.

  • critical mass is a bit like gay pride. well meaning but just serves to reinforce all the negative stereotypes ignorant people have about people wearing tight fitting, garishly coloured clothing in public.

    Oh,
    Ok

  • like normal then?

  • Dammit you've been had. mf is baiting the haiters.

For some reason the forces of darkness just can't wait to put the jackboot in to any thread where CM is mentioned.

  • ;) busted

havent been for ages but they were getting beyond the point of social ride, and taken over by the forces of darkness, beyond being able to explain to driver wtf was going on due to the overwhelming amount of aggro fans,

why hasint anyone linked the OP to the thread yet/...........

Ok, name one positive thing about CM?

The only thing I can think of is that cyclists feel safer, being in a flock, a bit like sheep.

  • But then you look at the negatives, which are legion.

I honestly think it's indefensible, and that anyone who cares about cycling should be against it.

  • its "reclaim the streets" on wheels no?

  • I reckon it works, but it doent work in London anymore
