  • yup, so thats 112 miles but I also have to do a bit of running afterwards.

Profile Aero-bottle (front): Energy Drink (gatorade). I'll keep the bottle topped up from aid stations on the course and I'll aim to be drinking about 500ml/hour.
Bontrager speed-bottle (downtube): Decanted SIS isotonic energy gels. I'll aim to have the equivalent of a gel every half hour. I know I could get these on the course but experience has taught me that these are often banana flavoured powerbar gels. I don't like powerbar at the best of time and have a pathological hatred of bananas so I'd rather take my own. People often tape gels to the top tube but I find using a bottle far easier. If they are passing up solid energy bars I might have a nibble depending on how I'm feeling.
X-lab (rear): LHS is toolkit/spare tub (glued or unglued)/CO2, Pit-stop immediately behind the seat. RHS 500ml water with nuun (electrolyte). It's this water that I could ditch if I was worried about the weight. There should be plenty of water on the course and experience has tought me that I'll probably barely touch it. But, I like the fact it's there in case I have any troubles taking in other fluids during the race. It's mainly there for piece of mind.

If I did get rid of the water I'd move the gels the vacant x-lab cage to keep them out of the way of the wind.

** edit. Not at Dorney I'm afraid... IMAT is this weekend too :) **

Wow, pretty interesting. So that downtube bottle is rammed full of gel?

  • ^^ Noice, what chainset is that? Looks like an anodized campag pista :O

nop! I can see why you said that ;)
This is a spanish track crankset (i can't remember the name of the brand). It's like those blanc brands. 70€ (cranks + 48t 144 bcd chainring). I liked the price and the looks.

the wheels are not Shamals but gipiemme tecno.

  • Wow, pretty interesting. So that downtube bottle is rammed full of gel?

Thats the plan. I find it easier than worrying about opening multiple gels on the bike and making a mess etc. The bottle is a touch smaller than I had expected but I'll get around 12 gels in there which should be more than enough. Also I find that SIS isotonic gels are plenty liquid enough to use in a bottle.

  • Sounds rank. But a good idea nonetheless.

  • Any suggestions guys?

Hope headset, Middleburn RS8 X-type cranks with Hope BB, Goldtec hubs are another option, Hope or USE stem, USE seat post. USE are selling road bars now, but I'd be very surprised if they were UK manufactured. Not that I'd use any of the above, except the Goldtec hub, if I were building up a Mercian.

  • mdcc you'd use goldtec over Royce hubs?
    @tiddy
I've got some nice 80s Royce cranks here doing nothing, 144bcd, unused. They are a Road set however, and 170mm. They are a polished copy of the Campag NR pattern. If you're interested, let me know.

As for parts, I would look at quality, aesthetics and price over where in tge world they happen to have been made.

I think you are right, and having quality components, regardless of origin is important, I just wanted to explore some options. Thanks for the input.

I'm going to put something together sympathetic to the frame, but I guess Nitto/Campy/whatever else isn't a bad option just because of its origin, I can add some classic british bits like a Brooks to get the look I want.

  • Jambon are you wearing white bibshorts in that photo?

  • Just getting all my bits together to finish this Bob Jackson Vigorelli this weekend. Here it is so far:

    Oxford Blue Vigorelli,
    Nitto 100 stem
    Nitto B123 bars
    Paul ELever
Phil wood hubs laced to Campagnolo Omega V rims
    Tange NJS Headset
    Brooks swift

    Still to add

    Sugino 75 - 51T
    Campagnolo Centaur BB
    Izumi chain
Some nice NOS Cambio Rino pedals, EAI cog - 19T, Brooks bartape.

Can't wait to ride it! Will post finished pics next week, with better light.

  • mdcc you'd use goldtec over Royce hubs?

Yes, because Goldtec are more than good enough and cheaper. At that point, it becomes irrelevant whether Royce are marginally better or not.

  • I'm excited, my Duell road bike is imminent, got all the bits except tyres. The group is nos 9 speed athena, it was going to be for Dave Creasy's latest bike, but it wasn't to be, and Wally had to sell it on. Hope I can use it well. Also going on it are Conti four season, wheels are Ambrosio on CXP14, 3ttt road bars with a fairly deep drop, nice(?) salsa 90deg stem, stripped SLR, gold cinelli jelly... and some shitty Spuds. I almost always ruin it with pedals.

    Fair point.

I have heard things about goldtecs that mean I would hesitate.

  • Like the whole cracking around the spoke hole?

TBH, it's probably just those case of something appearing worse than it is (I mean, sounding like it happening all the time).

  • Odd, they looks like such well looked after hubs as well...

  • ha^
no ed, don't put words in my mouth.

  • Never heard anything bad about goldtec/betd products, only occasional rumblings about slow service. I've had a few custom parts for mtb made up by betd (years back) and those bits last I heard were going strong.
Those cracked hubs look ducked, look at the state of the chain etc.

  • New bottom bracket with with ceramic bearings. And now the bearing cups are intergrated into the frame.

New alloy chain ring bolts from Royce

    And new tires from FMB

And new set-up on the blue bike

And a new clip with mr Obree

  • Chrobin: Current Projects Legend

  • kinda reminds me of the bradd pitt spoke in snatch

  • ^ Keith Haring's bike ;) cool!

  • Bit update from my last project , changing fork with easton sl , san marco mantra and crank bro's pedal

  • What's Lites*it? The maker?

    Very nice.

  • naahh.. it came without any decals so i put it on..

  • Ol' dirty Nago Super with random bits found in the shed. Need to have it repainted but not sure in what color. I like the Saronni red but it would be fun with something new. Orange, Black, Champagne?
