  • I had no idea he went in for that sort of 'treatment'. You can't really imagine a patient with advanced cancer being very comfortable there in Parliament Square whatever the treatment, and his prospects were never very good, but this is really sad.

Quite amazing determination to stick it out there in protest. RIP Mr Haw.

I don't know what his diagnosis was, but based on what I have read I would imagine it would be Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (SCLC), this is a particularly brutal disease with a 5 year survival rate of about 5% in the UK. When faced with such odds people who exhibit the kind of dogged determination that Mr Haw clearly had often look outside of conventional medicine. Unfortunately there is more often than not some unscrupulous quack (I actually prefer the term conman) who is only too willing to lighten a patients' wallet to administer "medicine" based on nothing more than anecdotal evidence and gut feeling, as opposed to medicine based on randomised clinical studies that adhere rigidly to scientific principle and are overseen by ethics comities. The blame always lies with the quack, not with the desperate person who wants nothing more than to extend their life.
