Chains are cheap, pulling a rejoined chain apart with your starting effort has the potential to be expensive. Pushing a rivet back through the plate makes a very weak joint compared with the factory process. Just buy another chain and keep a long one and a short one available for any future gear changes. Or buy an extra master link to suit your chain.
