    That's not the last year of your contract, it's after two years of your contract if you are over 28, or 3 years if you are under, and it's actually Fifa Article 17, the Webster ruling was simply a courts interpretation of that. In addition it still requires the player to pay the remainder of their contract, so there would be some argument as to whether you can negotiate with another club before you have bought yourself out of your own contract.

    However, while some players have used it, it's never been used for a high profile transfer.

    What you can do is negotiate with 6 months to go, that's the Bosman ruling.
