That way I can protect my front wheel and saddle from casual theft.
I would say (depending on your security need), get a pitlock front, and a small carridice with extra tight cable-ties. Then just keep one good D-lock in there. Or even just a d-lock with a frame mount. This is what I used to do on my hybrid. The only downside is that it doesn't look cool and some are a bit shit.
Alternatively if you cycle to work, then leave an extra lock at work. That's what I do.
