Hummm....
...some good points, might it be worth starting a dedicated thread about which locks work?
To my mind if you don't want to carry too many locks the best solution is one very good d-lock, and a QR front wheel.
Personally I usually use a cable like this:
plus a d-lock. In a bag.
That way I can protect my front wheel and saddle from casual theft.
