have you got a headset press.
-
• #3
What's not fitting?
What have you tried?
-
• #4
fraid not adam at perlie rides said he tried both the common sizes and the large was fractionally too large and the small was too small fractionally again its around about 30mm but he reckoned it may be some weird continental size

btw sorry for the delay in reply i keep having to go away and do work

well, you need to have your headtube reamed and faced so that the cups are slightly bigger than the hole for a good press fit.
-

mmmm just talked to perlie rides again and he said that my headset tubes diameter is 30.1 mm and reaming wont solve it cos itll take too much off the frame to fit the bigger cup

Headset installed too tight / not enough grease?
-
• #10
Was done by a reputable mechanic. Not me.
-
• #11
Maybe you just ride too fucking hard?
-
• #12
I think, you should ride a little bit slow....
-
• #13
Great input, thanks.
-
• #14
I suspect you were unfortunate enough to buy a lower quality part. And you ride to hard
-
• #15
Campag record. New. I don't ride hard at all.
-
• #16
Yes i read that it was a Campag part but perhaps it was manufactured poorly.. its unclear from the picture but i assume that the races are pitted now?
-
• #17
not unclear, i see clearly :/ regrease, new bearings, reinstall. i have lower standards than you, i think it looks fine.
its possible that there was a contaminant which affected the grease... etc etc
-
• #18
Yeah pitted. It's been cleaned and re-greased, I don't know if it's psychological, but it's not handling as well as it should.
I should lower my standards I guess, I'm only commuting.
I am still disappoint.

I had a Campag record headset, bearing fucked itself after 3 months of use, installed properly and all. Campag warranty people refused to fix it saying it was installed incorrectly which is bullshit, how can they even determine that without seeing the installation??. Will never buy campag again (thats a lie).

I always thought that pitting was possibly a sign that it was set too tight. That, or the headset was contaminated to the point where the bearings got stuck against the race.
I've not had trouble with Campag headsets. Only trouble I've had is with a Stronglight fork crown race which ended up slightly mangled, but the bike had taken a few knocks.

Poor installation or poor maintenance are the two most likely causes. Riding it too tight or too loose will fuck a headset (and if you're unlucky, your frame). Headsets aren't really fit and forget parts.

Thought I'd resurrect rather than start a new thread.
Bottom headset cup on second hand frame is loose - Doesn't drop out on it's own, but can pull it out by hand. think it might be a JIS/ISO missmatch 30.2 mm vs 30.0 Any options - Heard mention of loctite/glueing it. Really don't want to have to shell out for new headset and fitting etc.

Loctite 641 Bearing Fit

Know a decent source to buy it - I can only find it for £10 inc. delivery - seems a little pricey

its a specialist product though. but very good. You'll find plenty of uses for it around the house I'm sure. and still £10 is cheaper than even the most budget of headsets (which might not even solve the loose'ness).
Actually I did have a cheap steel lugged frame once that had two no name cups pressed into it, once fully in (could do it with hands) they didn't move about or cause issue, but you could quite easily remove them with your fingers. another headset (a better quality tange job) was actually really tight to get in.
Hey
im trying to build up a new ride using my old bianchi goldrace 600 frame and i cant get a headset to fit it can anyone offer any help?
cheers
