    As it happens I have access to a latche and a bit of metalscraps so I made a "dorn" (translation needed) to fit the inside of the steerer within a 0.1mm tolerance.

    i think a 'dorn' is a sleeve.

    the idea being that you chop off the steerer, slip braze a sleeve inside and then basically extend the steerer tube. pretty tricky work obviously as if you braze it you have to not heat the joint at the fork crown for obvious reasons. might be better to weld? i'm not sure.
