• hi dooods!
    I am doing a bit of detective work on what could be causing a constant grinding/click every time I cycle whilst on the bike...it doesn't happen when I spin the cranks whilst the bike is unmounted. In an attempt to help paint a fuller picture ive listed the following facts for you:
    1) The chain line is straight.
    2) The chainring teeth are slightly sharp as is the cog on the rear (am I right in thinking these need changing?)
    3) Im running a brand new single speed Chain (not a halflink)
    4) The click definitely comes from the drive side of the bike

    I'd really appreciate your input to help me solve this mystery as there isn't a lbs near me and I have to rely on internets or library!!
    A pal said that the click could be due to the rear wheel being slightly off angle to when the chain feeds into the cog teeth hence the click, but i've dabbled with angles and still click. Interestingly there isn't a sound when I cycle really slow..

  • Most likely the rear sprocket is too worn and the chain is making this nose when trying to 'mesh' with it.

  • Thanks for the intel pifko! Well that's 2 ppl nodding at the rear cog now! Looks like I'll turn my attention to it. Another thing that im confused about was that I did a 'like for like' switch from a half link to a normal ss chain and there was no noise at all when it was running a half link..? Do you think it's worth me using half links from now on?

  • Sometimes when you put a new chain on the old chainrings and sprockets, it makes a bit of a racket, it will bed down over time.

    But still I'll have a look for a new cog coz it sounds like it needs changing from what's been said.

  • I'll never be a weight weenie or I'd have to stop drinking beer! If you see how much it costs to save a gram you'd be best off to go on a diet or spend more time training or something or, umm, spend less time on the internet cough. I like heavy bikes and the best example is an old BSA 3 speed roadster from the 50s with a top tube shifter - They are so smooth and sturdy and comfortable.

    As for noise on the fixed gear, it can get a little obsessive. Brickman, you are 100% right about MTBs and those jockey wheels.. lots of noise there and a lot more of an orchestra of clatter so that nothing really stands out.

    After about 50 miles that drive train on the Phil / Miche combo settled down and it's more like a gentle sewing machine noise now.

  • I've got a 48t Primato Advance, KMC Half link chain and a token track sprocket and cannot get it to shut up! Chainline seems spot on but the chain noise is really irritating... it's all brand new though so hopefully will quiet down soon?

  • If you're a gentile obsessed with quiet bikes you could be 'noise goys'.

  • I just replaced the rear cog on my bike and got that horrid click/grind that i could feel vibrate through the whole frame.

    I turned the chain around and that solved it straight away (guess I mush have reversed the chain without realizing while changing the cog and giving it a bit of a clean).

  • on a cheap 10spd setup, whole thing is silent in either front ring and 1,2,4,5th but 3rd. Mother of god she clatters in 3rd.

    I guess its probably been sat on that cog most of its life.

  • I have a similar issue with a quill stem. It will make a clunk/ting under hard braking, and also if there's a 'bump' to the front wheel. Do I need to take the headset apart and refit it?

  • Sheldon appears to indicate loose headset.

  • Loose, but if you tighten it until it stops the float then check for how it rotates. If it's notchy or stiff then it may need new bearings and grease. Very easy to do if you have a big enough pair of spanners. You might need to check the bearing surfaces too. If these are worn then it's a new headset. Cheap enough though.

  • so, the drivetrain on my bike is pretty quiet when spun without loading, which makes the source very difficult to detect. having changed every component on the drivetrain, the bb is the remaining suspect. with the chain taken off, i notice a light clicking noise when the crankset is spun.
    just wanna ask if there's a way to tell if the bb is alright without actually replacing it?

  • Thanks Oz! I find it slightly notchy even now, so maybe it is time for a new headset. I might see if I can improve the situation by re-alligning it.

  • Fulcrum 3 rear hub (also used on 0,1,2) decided to unwind itself today, put it back together but noticed an unsmooth 'feel' to the roll when held in hand. Checked against the front hub which is (as CC Andy would say) buttery smooth. No sounds just by feel.

    unlikely to be bearings as they've not done enough miles yet (<2000k) possibly under-overtightened?

  • so, ive just changed my chainwheel from 46t to 48t. and got myself a new chain.

    been getting a vibration through the crankarm, the right side , the one the chain ring is attached too.

    at first i thought it might just be the chain needing to break in or something. but , after a couple of hours ride today , it was still happening. ..... just put the old 46t back on , just to see what would happen and .... no vibration.

    both chainrings are brev m . why would i be getting a vibration on the 48t ?

    got me a reet bit peeved .

  • Hi all, hoping to tap into the infinite wisdom of this forum!

    Summary to avoid tl;dr: random occasional clunking noise when pedalling, never when coasting. Possibly freewheel? It has some play if that is a clue.

    Can you help me answer:

    • Is this a common or bad problem?
    • Do I need to replace something or will adjustments sort this?
    • How can I avoid it next time, or will it just happen?

    More details for the keen: Starting to have this problem more and more, which doesn't seem to affect the running of the bike except that it's a bit off-putting and I'm afraid it's a precursor to all sorts of things going wrong so here goes:

    When I pedal, there's a metallic clunk noise almost at random. This is not associated with:

    • any particular point in the pedal stroke.
    • any number of revs of chain or wheel.
    • any particular level of pedal-pressure or cadence (so happens when cranking hard or just spinning light).
    • any chain skipping or slipping.
    • any particular sprocket in use.
    • any particular weather conditions.

    Sometimes it can happen many times in a row, other times it may happen once in a two hour ride. My freewheel is a stock Shimano 6 speed, mf-tz06 I believe. There is some play in it when twiddled by hand but not a lot, and doesn't clunk when you jiggle it manually (yes yes technical terms ;) ) Bottom bracket is smooth with no play, chain is well looked after, as are the mechs. Big mystery to me - hope you can help!
