But to the owner the green bike is his beater. There's pictures of Colnagos, Nagasawas and Samsons all being used as everyday workhorses. What makes a beater/rat is how it is used not necessarily how cheap it is.

The green frame is a cheap from mail order. Parts such as the front wheel and saddle may have once (to someone) been expensive, but they are spare parts – parts without a use.
After only 4 years riding bikes I've got spare everything. Wheels, forks, frames, you name it. Some of it could be called 'expensive'. Yes I sell stuff on, but you hang on to some parts for a bit. It's what happens. You build beaters out of this stuff.
