perhaps just try soaking them in cold water for a while? might was the beer out while keeping them in shape
That will wash out the excess indigo which will lighten the jeans and affect how they fade in. Will likely soften them a bit too, which will also affect how they break in (the stiffer the denim, the more pronounced any creases will be).
There's no exact right or wrong but generally I thought the common consensus was to avoid washing with water for a minimum of 6 months and dry clean if you really have to wash them during that period.
