  • 100% agree jono.

Hockey players wear helmets/facecages but high sticking is still a rule that is enforced, which results in a penalty.

And from what i remember ,brawling/fighting most definitely does result in a penalty.

  • Hey folks. Never actually played bike polo but have decided it looks pretty fun having seen some vids on youtube and etc. Got a bike i'm building up for it and was just thinking about the issue of protecting my hands and face when I stumbled across this thread - so, well timed.

Anyway, I was thinking of paintball gear. Admittedly if someone is trying to break it to get through to the soft flesh underneath, they will - but for glancing blows and accidental hits it should be more than adequate no? Also has the advantage of being light and designed for a sport where you're running about and visibility is an issue..

Unintended benefit, you can freak the opposition out by telling them you are their father.

These could be worth a punt for 20 quid..

  • I wear big gloves and a helmet so I can work with my hands and my family will recognise me.

    Gold.

Yeah, I agree, I expect to get the odd hit to the face, but don't see my family that often anymore so it's cool...

Anyway, I was thinking of paintball gear.

Paintball gear tends to frame your eyes a fair bit which is bad for your peripheral vision, but I'm not much of an expert. Most people seem to prefer cages to plastic, etc.

  • I don't wear big gloves, and got a full on whack to the thumb on sunday from mat who was hacking my mallet, so it that my fault?

  • I've no idea. I have always stood against hacking so gloves don't come into it IMO.

I don't think this thread is a place to settle on court clashes.

  • just an example, no beef.

  • I do think that people should be able to play throw ins without having to dress like a stormtrooper?

  • paintball gloves look pretty good.

  • The plastic digs in to your hand on the inside. I only got some cheap ones though.

They can and they do, but then they get hurt.

Gabes was hurt in the hand by a player who never wears padded gloves.

Joe was hit in the face by a player who never wears a face cage.

My point is that people who wear gloves and cages don't play with-out concern to other players' hands and faces, they just hold a lot of value in their own.

  • Or they've been hit in the face/hand really hard and don't want it to happen again.

  • They can and they do, but then they get hurt.

Ok maybe I should have said people shouldn't need tomdress like a stormtrooper to avoid injury in throwins!

If you were playing football in the park with friends you wouldn't expect to be scythed down by a challenge... Or have to wear shin pads...

  • I totally wore shin pads for park kick arounds.
Obviously league games and tourneys are played harder, but you can still get hurt in throw ins even if everyone is careful. Nature of the game. The game is changing and people are getting faster and harder.

+1 to Gabes. I bought padding after every decent knock I took, with the exception of the cage, because I don't want to take that chance.

  • Think i'm going to go for the Bauer 4500 with Tru Visor 2, £100 chik ching... ouch (less ouch than ball in face).

  • I got my american football helmet out, fits better that I thought it would. Prob have a worse view than all the hockey helmets, but doesn't really matter as I never look up anyway.

  • Put the face-cage back on my Bauer at Souths last night and I really hated it, I wasn't imagining the discomfort the first time then... I cannot play with that set-up... Gonna try one of the hurling helmets that are floating about, lots more room to breathe/see by the looks of it...

  • If you want to sell the cage I'm interested

  • Erin's got first dibs, but yeah you got seconds, Ed...

  • sweet...

  • This place for good cheap hockey-hats:

  • I think I am going to cut out a few down sections from the grill for better visibility - after-all, the grill is made to stop pucks not balls - probably be able to open it up a bit and still be safe.

  • Yeah a lot of people have done this John. There's a dude a few pages back who maybe took a few too many, check it out <<<<<<<<<<

Looks sweet though, you guna get your hair in?
    ;)

  • Fuck knows..

These arrived today, seem good (still gonna be hockey taped though, obvs)

  • Yeah mine have lasted surprising well apart from the thumb and forefingers went on the palm quite quickly. Definitely hockey tape them up to start with and you're laughing. I might stock pile.

matching gloves, pads and you have my old bike. Should I be worried?
    ;)
