Can you get a puncture due to heat transfer? i.e. overuse of the front brake on a downhill section, hot rim, POP!
Plus, this occurred during an early summer evening in the UK. Temperature ~12 centigrade. Even if you constantly feathered the brake for the entire 90 second descent (don't do this), the rim's not going to heat up much.
Either your blocks were set up incorrectly and touched the sidewall, or you just got a 'normal' puncture.
