Riding fixed on hills..
Yeah, no-one's won a national hillclimb on fixed since like since 2008 or some ancient shit like that.

42:16 on my Plug which is about 70". Would probably prefer around 75" maybe?

Do they also race *down *the hill?
No they don't. I want you to go away and think about your actions for a while.

• #1059
Yes, they often do if they're late signing on.

How flippant.

41:26 fixed + 7% x 20km = Jelly legs
Still do better times than with gears + freewheel. But I'm poo cyclist, so the less options I have while riding the better.

Currently riding wet trails 42:22 ss. Might invest in a 24t sprocket for the wet season.

Wasn't there a chap on here last year who rode the Ventoux on a fixed gear?
All the synapses were clearly not firing there..... -

After a couple of years on 48:18 (70GI), I switched back to 48:19 (66.6GI) and I am really enjoying the spinning. Easier to accelerate in traffic and I'm able to spin better these days on the downhills. I think there is a bit of macho bravado about the big gears some people are pushing. IMO it's not slower when you go lower. Tried this gearing on an out of town ride in error (meant to switch back to 48:18) and it was totally fine. Managed decent average speed. Surely looking after your knees, manoeuvrability and developing leg speed are more important than high numbers.

Rode Yorkshires hilly Yorkshire on 78 for a while, got T-Rex legs, swapped cog out for more skid patches now riding approx 73... it's a bit spinny but is ok, life on the ups is a little less daunting.

You have more control desending with a lower ratio, so are likely to desend faster (IMHO). I love 48:16 as it gives a natural feel high cruising speed on the flats. If I was riding fixed, in town, I'd swap to a 19 in an instant.

46x16 = roundabout 71"
The roads in Munich are flat and straight.
Have got a 15 teeth on the other side... -

mostly riding 52x17 faster with a lower cadence, but it might actually be killing me.

Nothing wrong with bumping old threads. Bring them back from the dead.

48x18. Can get 32mph on the flat for short bursts, and commuting in London there are few moments where that is possible safely anyway. I have tried higher gears but I end up going more slowly - acceleration is slower and only pacing mopeds etc (again rarely possible safely) do you need more than 30mph anyway.

I'm also on 48x18 (70").
I had 74" which was good for long rides in the flatlands of Nederland, but not here. Switched to 67" briefly last week but it was too light. Got up Highgate West Hill on 70" too so it must be the magic gear.
