It's pretty understated and if you didn't know what the number signified it is pretty anonymous-where's the crassness? For the people that were moved to buy it it will remind them of someone who by all accounts was a great guy and an amazing cyclist, and yes, remind them that they did a good thing for people they don't personally know.
I don't see anything bad there and I don't think it is motivated by anything other than a sincere desire to help out his partner and kid.
