"Campagnolo's fanatical devotion to aesthetics."
"the first year's production run was a disaster--the cable clamping mechanism would fail, and the brakes would of course stop working!"
"for some unknown reason, Campagnolo's engineers decided to use a 3.5mm screw in that spot. We dare you to try to find a 3.5mm allen key."
"They work, and they will stop you, but not with the sheer stopping power of dual pivots. We're a little nervous using them on steep, technical descents, but the style points gained by having them on the bike outweighs those concerns."
Fucking Campag lovers.. "does my hair look nice as I plough into this tree?" :-)
Anybody know what year had the problems? I need a front caliper and I found a brakeset of the skeleton centaurs from '06 for just $10 US more than a Shimano 105 front only, and while I don't need a rear brake, I know folks who do

Thread from the dead, they are talking about the Delta's.
From up the page(andyp): http://www.campyonly.com/roadtests/delta.html -

still think that the first brake upgrade is the pads ! swiss stop.

Have pair of deltas which I'm thinking of putting on a build. After reading a lot of comments on the net I'm still not sure whether to put them on a bike or not. I'm not sure which version I got but they are the "nurly" wires but I can post some pix if it helps. Does anyone on this forum have got them on their bike? Wud like people's opinion. General consensus wavers between "prone to failure" to "they are fine for every day non pro riders" or people who are not riding a bike on it's limits. I hope to read ur opinions before I finally decide.

They're shit. People only buy them because of their appearance.

• #83
Shit they maybe, but dangerously? will they fail?

Read the info in the link.

it's like braking with butter, that sort of shit.
I ditched my monoplanar for the cheapest Veloce brake - much much better.

Yep I've read that link before, tho it says they aren't great it doesn't say they are crap either. Many repliers on there also saying they are great! But I wanted to know if anyone on this forum have got very bad or good reviews.

I used a pair back in the day, the Campy Only link is good for setting them up as they do work best if you run them loose (with the pads around 3 mm from the rim). I found they worked okay, but most dual pivot brakes are much better for modulation and stopping power. They certainly aren't dangerous.

Can you read?
"In practice, the first year's production run was a disaster--the cable clamping mechanism would fail, and the brakes would of course stop working!
They were difficult to adjust ... God help you if you lost the 3.5 allen wrench. I manufactured a tool for final cable adjustment. Stopping power was fair, but easily modulated. I can lock the brakes, but it takes more effort than my dual pivots. Worn out pads can create problems ... you can run out of brake. They're heavy."
I want brakes that work, are reliable and easy to adjust. Failing on these points is pretty poor.

3.5 mm allen keys are readily available and adjusting deltas is pretty straightforward once you've done the initial set up.
I doubt you've ever used them DJ so your opinion on the matter isn't worth shit. No offence, like.

I also used a pair back in the day and would agree with that. They worked fine.
They aren't as good as modern dual piot's but what component from 20 years ago is comparable to it's modern counterpart?

claus always seems fairly in control with his Deltas whenever I've ridden with him (including some frenetic descending).

Can we also pimp brake levers in this thread? :)

yes they work fine. that is if you dont race with them in a close pack where everyone else runs modern dual pivots. for normal riding and even rainy mountain decents they have proven to work for me.
3.5mm alan key is available form clerkenwell screws. what really made the difference on my deltas was to replace the spacers that so the pads sit a tiny bit closer to the rim. the perfect spacer for that are the inside parts of campag chainring bolts. i also got new pads and shoes. you really dont want to run a dried-up 20 year compound of original brake pads.

Thanks guys, enuff positives to use when riding alone. I know that they are never gonna be as good as modern ones but wud be a shame to get rid of them and they wud look good on a period bike. Now I just gotta make sure they are NOT first gen ones

I have recently acquired a FUJI Roubaix 3.0 2010. I have to say it's the best bike I have ever owned. I am very happy with it, gears shift like a dream (this is of course relative to my bike history).
The only thing I would like to upgrade are the calipers.
Now, obviously, the first thing I thought was go as expensive as I can afford. However, I was wondering if there was anything I was missing? Which calipers would be a wise upgrade to go with the Sora shifters? I would imagine they pull cable in a different way than say a set of DuraAce.
Any ideas?

All nearly the same (Shimano Dual Pivot callipers).
I think it may be more wise to invest in other components, as there is nothing wrong with Sora callipers.
Ultimate front brake customisation.... Olala!!!!
