The ref gave a goal kick, having not seen that the West German goal-keeper, Schumacher, had committed a terrible, life-threatening assault on the French player Battiston. Several days later, having seen the video, the ref said that he should have sent Schumacher off, and given a penalty to the French.
The French lost the game on penalties. 1982 World Cup semi-final.
As you can see from the video, Battiston was knocked completely unconscious and lost some teeth. Schumacher never fully apologised for the foul.
(Anyone know what what "Zusammenprall" means?)
