  • average speed of a motorised vehicles in central london - 7mph.

avertage speed of a cyclists in central london - 14mph.

Average speed of Nowhere Fast (fixed) in Central London?

  • Hm, how about looooads of speed bumps? Ideally with gaps for bicycles...

Have you ever ridden on a road with that style of speed bump?

The cars weave left and right at high speed to slot through the gaps.

The style of speed bump that crosses the entire width of the road only cause cars to brake heavily, then accelerate hard, rather than weaving at the same time.

  • ^ yeah they are used well in places as a last resort but they're a nightmare on bike or motorbike.

This is going to sound a little bit Daily Mail but how about...

On-the-spot driving bans for drivers that can't correctly answer basic highway code questions such as: Whatever do those funny yellow crisscross lines on the junction mean? Who has right of way when there is an obstacle to traffic? etc.

  • On-the-spot driving bans for drivers that can't correctly answer basic highway code questions such as: Whatever do those funny yellow crisscross lines on the junction mean? Who has right of way when there is an obstacle to traffic? etc.

And, "What does that large green box with a bicycle painted in it mean?" "So WHY THE F@CK ARE YOU IN IT??"

  • many drivers are already driving on a ban and / or when they should not be for some other reason.

the status quo is tending to criminalise those that cant afford to drive - but drive anyway cos it is too dangerous not to / everybody else is.

this is why we hear about / see so many hit and runs.

imo not a healthy set of circumstances.

those that obey the law and dont drive (peds and cyclists) then get victimised by drivers.

imo not a healthy set of circumstances either.

either way it leads me to the conclusion that the status quo is not acceptable or sustainable.

  • I wish there was a £30 fine for every driver who entered the bike box when the lights are red. My brother would be in some serious debt if they did.

  • If you use the shift key is it a sign that you are beholden to Big Oil?

  • I wish there was a £30 fine for every driver who entered the bike box when the lights are red. My brother would be in some serious debt if they did.

There is a £60 fine and 3 points for this- but it is never enforced

  • Really? He'd be in double the amount of debt and wouldn't have a licence.

They could make a fortune having a copper at a set of traffic lights with a camera. They'd practically pay for the coppers wages for that day pretty quick

  • It's a moving traffic offence. A policeman has to witness a car deliberately driving into the cycle box after the light has gone red. I don't believe there has ever been a prosecution.

I think the 20mph limit argument is a red herring. I'd rather see whole swathes of london backstreets completely closed to motor vehicles and turned into cycleways, giving cyclists direct routes, free of motor traffic, to all parts of the city, and leaving cars to 'zoom' along the major arteries at their 7mph average.

  • Instead those streets are being opened up for 24hr deliveries.

    :O

The Snob's got hold of the BBC story.

  • I don't think the police are even aware that it's an offence - Just this evening i've seen two police cars drive into an asl box at a red.

  • ^citizens arrest their asses

  • nobody respects the cycle box anyway. But I'd be tempted to just jump off my bike and tell ask the police if they know it's an offence... then I might get arrrested for erm... anti social behaviour??

Of course I have, but point taken ;-) To be fair though, I only see the accelerating/braking thing occasionally and if I do, I'm mostly finding it ridiculously amusing as it it so utterly pointless.
I guess I was hoping that a city full of speed bumps would put off people driving who would then switch to cycling or walking or whatever, but that's probably slightly unrealistic...unfortunately!

avertage speed of a cyclists in central london - 14mph.

I'd like to have that on the back of a T-shirt!

  • So would I; there is no way the average speed of cyclists in central London is 14mph.

  • If fired from a catapult, maybe?

  • my average commute stopping at every red light is often 14mph bang on.

  • Yep, agreed.

  • If fired from a catapult, maybe?

Fired from a cannon more like

  • ^citizens arrest their asses

Use minicam footage to ban them all

  • I would suggest that your commuting average speed will be reduced by being squirted in the face with teargas and then truncheoned to the floor, however.

  • ^ depends if you are wearing a gas mask or not.

  • A truncheon proof gas mask?

    Are you advocating helmet wearing?
