Just ran my first 5k (in probably 5 years, and even then, only ever on treadmills in the gym - and I've put on probably 30-40lbs since then). Was only supposed to go 4.5, but felt fine at that point so just kept going. Probably not the best of ideas, as I'm a big guy and my legs may explode.
The time is nothing to brag about (33.03), but I'm pretty chuffed.
