I'm just waiting for Deptford's gentrification to accelerate. Yes, there are bars and cafes opening but its still a really nice cultural blend.
When the Deptford Project opened they banged on about providing services for the community but for the life of me can't understand why they think the average SE8er reads the Times (thats where they advertise their events). Can't help but think locals don't want to pay £10 for a fryup in a train carriage either. (Lovely fryup though it is).
Terry the discount store owner next door to the Deptford Project has never been invited to one of their events. He laughs about it being called a community project which is nice. Would be easy to be grumpy about it.
Don't get me wrong, I go to the new bars and restaurants and I'm glad that I have them in my area but its still sad when the community you know, love and grew up in starts filling up with tossers who at least on the surface appear to be concerned more about what they're wearing than helping a neighbour out.
EDIT: As long as the Albany Centre is still going, there will be a genuine community centre in the area.
Dan, you are genuinely the nicest guy I have ever met, all the best to you my friend!
