I saw this thread and was like "fuck, 12 pages discussing gang attack on bikes down the road I ride through twice a day!"
Than I read the last 4 pages.
I've never even felt the slight bit uneasy cycling through that area. In fact the roads up to Essex road are beautiful. The two guys with the maserati's seem happy with parking their cars on the street. I really don't see it as being any worse than the rest of london.
That said my two neighbours in the same building got robbed 4 times between them in 3 months. Twice with weapons and while they were in the house. Their windows open to a secluded garden and crackheads made hay. Both have got bars on the windows now. The police who came delighted in telling me that Hackney had the highest number of gangs for any area of britain. 21 recognised gangs and that we lived on the border of 4 gangs territories. Cheers lads.
Still just walked home from Dalston without the slightest bit of fear. And didn't fear when I lived on Shacklewell Lane either. A place that people used to say "oh god, you live there? Do you ever feel safe?" of course I did.
