A question for you wheel builders - I've run my hub and rim choices through Lenni's database and it suggests a 295 mm spoke length. I've a box of 298 mm spokes sat here - is it worth risking it or should I get the proper length spokes?
You could use nipple washers to compensate for 1mm of length, and then you should be OK. The washers help you build a better wheel too, by reducing the amount the nipple grips the rim drilling. When I used them I had them standing in a bottle cap of oil, to help matters further.

goolge image searches nipple washers at work
ED: actually they dont look to be 1mm thick to me.

I may have 1 or 2 at home I could put the verniers on if you like. -

I'd go with a new set of spokes, annoying as it is when you have a box sitting around at home. You don't want to end up in the position where you lace up the wheel and then get it almost true only to find out that you can't go any further due to the spokes being at the end of the nipple threading as MDCC tester said.
EDIT - I actually did exactly this when i built my first ever wheel and ended up having to un-lace (if thats a word) and rebuild adding an extra few hours into the mix :-(

Anyone know the dimensions of Shimano 600ax hubs? I've tried EDD and Spocalc, no joy.
I tried calipering them, but the spokes I have seem too short.
They are really awkward to lace due to double sets of trailing spokes. It's a bloody nightmare.
Cheers

Measuring up for 105 5600's on Open Pro's. 32 spokes trusty 3x pattern.
Spocalc only has 5500 rear and 5501 front listed... anyone know if they changed signifcantly in the move to 5600?
Interstingly (or not) the tech doc for 5600 rear still lists 5501 in the interchangeability table... suggests they're the same (inside bits though maybe) I guess?
Gonna measure up of course, just wondering if there's a quick 'n easy answer too from someone in the trade.
**Updated: **Think I've found it... now just to check http://www.shimano.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/us/index/tech_support/tech_tips.download.-Par50rparsys-0034-downloadFile.html/07%29%20Hub%20Specs.pdf

Word of warning to anyone building up Rigida Sputniks - the ERD for 700Cs is listed as 600mm pretty much everywhere online but I reckon they're more like 604mm, as I had to go up 2mm on all the spoke length calculations I did. Should have done a proper measurement but didn't have measuring spokes to hand.

Anyone know the length I'd need for High Flange Dura-Ace track 32h to Open Pros? Front and Rear (double sided). I've measured at 292 but I'm certainly no wheelbuilder, is that right? Cheers.
Edit: Oh and 3x!!

^ shouldn't be too hard a calculation... what numbers did you use?
-
• #410
I've got a DT Swiss poster thingy that tells you how to do it, I'm just not sure if I've done it properly!
-
• #411
put your numbers here and someone will check I'm sure
erd on open pro is 605 tho dt website has it as 604, just been doing calculation myself yesterday for build on same rims.

^^ spocalc has the DA High Flange listed
For front it's giving 292 exactly.
For rear, I got numbers based on this link: http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-147341.html as the spocalc hub listed is the single sided one.
it's 291.5, so round down being accepted makes 291. But you'd probably get away with 292 still.
I.e. you were right with your calcs, I think.*
- I'm only on wheelset #2 so don't count me as an expert. Good practice doing the calcs though.

Half a mil up is no bother, definitely that rather than 1.5 down (since spokes usually come in even mm lengths).

I've measured the Open Pro ERD as 604mm and it's the measurement that I use for all my calculations. Got the figure stuck in my head as I build so many Open Pro's.

cool, affects calcs by .5mm, am yet to build the rear and this makes enough of a difference for me in the calc to choose a different length. cheers.

Hey all.
I'm building a wheelset and just need help confirming spoke measurements. I've used Spocalc already, i just want to see if anyone has built with this combination before:Campagnolo Record high flange hubs, 100mm/120mm, 28 hole
New Mavic Open Pro hubsCheers!

Yeah I had a good search. I'm not after the calculator itself, I already have that. I'm just wondering if anyone has used this particular combination before, and can vouch for the readings from said calculator...

It's just a calculator based on geometry it can't actually be wrong if you have entered the correct components. Even if you wanted someone to check you haven't mentioned the number of crossings you want to use.

The maker of Spocalc which I used (and is what that web version is based on) still doesn't guarantee that the presets included in the spreadsheet are correct.
So I want to check if someone has relied on the info before. (with success, perhaps?)
Oh, yeah, and I forgot to mention # of crossings. I haven't actually made my mind up yet, I'm still devouring much information on wheelbuilding, but thinking 3-cross.

As Adoubletap has said, the formula is correct.
The measurements you can check yourself. The calc I linked to lets you input your own data if your not satisfied with those of the preset.

Could someone help me with spoke length?
I bought these hubs, one front, one rear:
http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/HUOOLF/on-one-large-flangetrack-hubAnd these rims:
http://www.bike-mailorder.de/shop/Roadbike/Hubs-Rims-Wheels/Felgen/Mavic-Open-Sport-Felge::5585.htmlI have found some spoke calculators, but can't find all the numbers I need.
Thank you.

Oh, and I forgot..
I don't know which lacing to do?Is 2 cross front and back ok?
-
• #424
spocalc.xls should have the numbers you need iirc
3 cross is industry standard, good luck...

No ERD for the open sport in that, but I found that to be 607mm by google.
Spocalc tells me 295.5mm
So do I go 295 or 296mm?
I thought as much. Damn.
