I didn't know you you were poor at the time. no different than a lot of people on here then.
My, and many other cyclists who have used clips&straps have found that a single strap is plenty. The only people I know to use double straps are sprinters. What I'm saying is that what you're saying is not the usual experience with straps. I know road sprinters who have never found the need for double straps so I doubt you can say that you're riding 'harder' than a racing cyclist
