It depends what you mean... Rolling average will probably be quicker than 15mph based on previous outings with Sam "big ring" Braker. Actual average will be lower if there are more than about 4 people. Which there will be.
Way too soon to get accurate wind/weather info imho.

• #78
Ideally, we'll be clipping along at and average of 16mph.
Just spotted this upthread.

Sorry chaps, I'm out. Spoke to Braker a few weeks ago and 16 was mentioned there too. My best rolling average for a century on the flat with no wind is 15mph.
Yes, too early for wind forecast but would rather do this route another time anyway. This is a flat ride and I reckon I can improve on my usual speed slightly but a full 1mph increase over 100 is unrealistic.
Think I'm going to ride to Woodbridge...finally. Another time ladies and gents, was really looking forward to this.

Just to add, if I had managed above 15mph rolling on the 62 mile ride I did on Saturday I'd be willing to take a punt.

15mph on your own is a definitely harder than 16mph in a group. FACT!
-
• #81
I've never riden in a proper group before...perhaps another reason to steer clear so to speak?
Don't get me wrong. I've got a few centuries under the belt, I'm fitter than some and I'm raring to go...the uncertainty comes from not knowing what to expect.
-
• #82
Not knowing what to expect is the best part!
It's up to you whether or not to join, but if you've ridden this distance before then no worries i'd say. The average speed will depend on how many we are and the conditions, so I wouldn't get hung-up on numbers... it's not like we will shoot off like some lycra-clad roadie with adequacy issues on club run. Also, if anyone is struggling during the day for whatever reason, i'll have a pre-mixed cocktail of coffee, roids and speed ready to go.

Decisions, decisions... okay so here's the spiel. My head says "go to Bristol, you need to get the miles in", while my heart says "go to Cambridge, it's only 60 and it'll be a saunter"
With family comitments it now seem I'll be doing this ride and ditching the Cambs one. I spoke to Sam on the Bridges ride, and he convinced/soft peddled this as an easy relatively flat ride
@Stonehedge please don't miss out 'cos your not sure about averaging 15 or 16, I can asure you that you'll be the one drafting me!

Steroids or hemorrhoids?

Jesus, I really have become a bit of a fanny. Please ignore my last few posts. Wind or no wind, group or no group, I'll see you at Farnie at the start and you'll see me at the end at some point for a pint of finest cider.
I've just stocked up on power bars and I feel as fit as a butchers dog. If I don't finish, its not going to be due to lack of HTFU or you can call me Florence.
EDIT: As long as the wind isn't bonkers because I KNOW I can't handle a century into 15+

anyone booked Waterloo to Farnborough yet? Just looked it up, 07:45 or 08:09 for £13.70
or is it better to try and sort out a group save on the day? If so, I suggest people get there at 15 mins before departure 'cos of all the kerfuffle
-
• #87
Group save. Flexible. Cheap.

Fellow Bathonians and Bristolians, which train are you intending to get? I'll be heading down from Oxford, so can meet you all at Reading (where, I assume you'll be changing?) to get the train to Farnborough North. From there it's less than a mile to Farnborough Main.

I'm coming up to stay in London's famous London on Friday night. Will be hanging out in Brick lane wearing lycra and disco slippers. Will have Hozza in tow, but sadly not Goochie, as he broke his collarbone and a few ribs at Calshot on Sunday. See you all at Waterloo.

My Mum. Flexible. Cheap.
Word.
Groupsave sounds good. Would be good to turn up a bit early to sort things out.
-

Also, I'm happy to backstop this one if need be. But it'd be good to have someone to share the duties with, makes it easier for someone to get the message to the front if the other has to stop.
The one exception I have to this is the couple of steeper lumps, I'll be fixed so will need to keep some momentum to get up them (I only remember there being 2 or 3 steep climbs, and they're all short). I will, of course fall back once I'm over them.

That would be much appreciated Andy, but I imagine it will only be required at a certain level of attendance. Beers on me at the end for the trouble.
-
• #93
Cool cool, will play it by ear.
This would probably be a good time for everyone to give the bike a quick check over, so if you have any maintenance etc that needs doing, you can get it sorted this week.

I will be on the 6.30am train from bristol with i think 3 or 4 others.
So yeah it would be good to meet up in Reading before heading to Farnborough North. -
• #95
I've just realised this is an 8am start, not 10am like the recce :(
newonevets, your train looks to be getting into Reading at 0744. I'll be getting there at 0657 so shall we meet on the platform? I think it's platform 4a, and the train to Redhill.
-
• #96
Meet at Waterloo @ 8am
This is for those coming from London and we'll jump on the first train that comes along as a group. I'll be PMing everyone my number so we can all keep in touch incase there are complications on the day. I imagine departure from Farnborough will be no earlier than 9am, but we'll stay flexible so that nobody has a wasted journey and misses the start.
-
• #97
Ok, in which case I'll get the train that gets into Farnborough North at 0829, and will be at Farnborough Main before 0900.
newonevets, have you booked your tickets yet? You might be able to get an extra hour in bed!
-
• #98
yeah tickets all booked.
I leave Bristol at 06.30 and get to Farnborough North for 08.30 so should be on the same train as you from reading. -
• #99
Yeah that makes sense, not really sure why I thought I'd be getting into Reading so early. Will meet you on the platform. The train to Farnborough North didn't have any bike spaces so we'll just have to put them in the doorway, this seemed to be fine last time but we might need to split bikes up so we're not clogging up a door completely.

Looks like I'm out guys - flatmate's keen to ride to Brighton this weekend and he usually takes some persuading so I should probably indulge him.
Also, the potential for a SW headwind makes it unlikely that I could even pretend to keep pace.
Enjoy the day guys & gals(?).
- braker
So, anybody have any thoughts if 15mph is going to be too slow for this ride?
I note that there may well be a headwind on Saturday.
I'm bang up for the challenge...
