Netbooks are good for web browsing and email, (and games like transport tycoon). Compared to regular laptops, they are small, light and the batteries generally last much longer. Good for travel (backing up photos from a digital camera, watching movies, etc)
They are not so good for work because: a) office will run slowly, b) the screens are tiny, c) the keyboards are tiny.
If you know you need to be running office, then you probably don't want to be getting a netbook.
