Trying to change my commuter legs into riding legs and embarked on an Essex Hills Jaunt yesterday. Bethnal Green via as many hills in Epping as we could find, then out beyond the M25 on a loop of some lanes and back via Epping again (somewhere around 35 miles). Beautiful weather and the best company!
I have to admit my novice lungs and legs were at the very limit of themselves on a couple of occasions and I used every gear on my road bike (how some of you do hills* fixed is completely beyond me). Didn't quit a single climb though and felt a real sense of achievement rolling back into town along the Lea Bridge Road. Nothing compared to most of what gets posted on here I know, but I'm already gagging to go further as soon as I can.
I've been riding bikes one way or another since I was 3 but haven't ever really tried to put the miles in or even gone beyond urban dashing. Loved it! Any tips or routes for that neck of the woods greatly appreciated. I WILL do a century ride before winter falls.
*yes I know they're baby hills relatively speaking!
