I don't like cycling with earphones in, I rely too much on tiny sounds to accompany my sight, especially when crazy nodders try to undertake me on the inside of a bus or something
I find that listening to an mp3 player with built in external speakers works a treat. I can hear the music, but can also hear everything else. It does also mean that peds hear me coming so don't step out into the streets without looking. And I think it scares people, as I could pass for one of them intimidating looking Yout who have music blaring out of their (stolen) phone.

Also fucking annoying when people play their music loudly within earshot.

while cycling?

If you want to do it, fine, if not, also fine. There's no reason you can't be a safe cyclist while listening to music.
People talking about how they rely on little noises to let them know they're about to get overtaken, surely you wouldn't be caught off guard if you used your eyes more.

Hi,
First thread I open,
When I was young(er), I used to go to the college riding, with Sony fontopia in the ears, usually Pink Floyd, or Hendrix.
Now I realize it was awfully dangerous. Nevertheless, Your opinion will be interesting on this one.
A subsidiary question is, what headphones do you use :-)?
Thanks,
Greg

fucking big ones

I tried some days ago with huge Sony MDR 7506, but these big cans take the wind and become noisy.
I would like to find something that give me music, does not block external sound (safety), and does not pick up wind. Someone searched and found this already?

Clearly this is a winner
Blasting a bit of Less Than Jake out of this while bombing to college would be the best thing ever.

Correct.
Pink Floyd will turn your brain to jelly. I was there in the 1970s. I saw what happened to those who listened to Pink Floyd. Don't do it.

Little experiment for you that might surprise a few of you.
Try changing an inner tube without headphones and then changing one with headphones playing music. You'll be suprised how much you rely on sound even for simple tasks without realising it.
Its an old cognitive test that a psychiatrist showed me (with another task) although admitedly it is possible to train yourself to improve performance devoid of aureal sensation.

I use my top lip to find the puncture, its one of the more sensitive parts of the body and can pick up the air escaping.

I'd love to have music when I'm riding in town but I dislike the feeling of being cutoff from the world even when I'm a walkenger so I normally only use one earbud out and about. on the bike I think even that is probably too distracting for me.
perhaps we should start a pirate cyclist radio station and all cyclists can wear little speakers to play it, it would fill london with music in rush hour and when peds hear their favourite song but the cyclist rides off they will feel sad about not being able to hear the song and will subconsciously connect no longer seeing a cyclist with a pang of distress and mentally they will start to yearn to see more cyclists.
this plan has absolutely zero drawbacks or flawed logic!

+1 That just dragged me out of my foul mood. Cheers blud.
Just remembered that my ski helmet has built in headphones...bit hot and sweaty for the bike though...it is fleece lined and has no vents. Can't understand riders who wear their ski helmets...must be like putting your head in an oven.
Its fucking stupid.
