Yeah it was only a stubby one (ill get a pic), but i did give it some torque as you do.
Amazing the threads are tougher than that nut though. -
• #203
I've snapped one of those nuts before - it's important to make sure it's snugged up against the locknut or it'll happen again when you tighten your tracknut

I guess it may have come loose, makes sense.
Nearly stopped my evening plans. -

Mr Owen Reed hasn't told his story here yet, so I thought I'd help him along:

bike was creaking for a while, then discovered this. There is a crack like this on three of the bolt holes. I overtightened about 6 months ago. Must have been expanding ever since. I have a torque wrench now to avoid such enthusiastic fastening.

Not sure if it belongs in epic fail or here,as it is both.
This eve I leave learnt why 10spd road frames do not make good fixed conversions.
Got home from work a few hours early so got set to rider down to the beach with some cheesecake, like you do.
Last descent to the beach thought I would give it some proper beans.
Mistake.Whole frame is a bit flexy, cranks are mafe from jelly and I'm using 3/32 ss chain, you can probably are where this is going.
Chain dumps off the chairing and spontaneously snaps, then chain whips itself around the rear cog, snaps again then jams the rear wheel. Already I'm on the brakes, but too late. The rear (tub) is already screaming for mercy, then pop, she's gone. I'm still sliding though, this was a fair old hill and frankly 70s canti brakes are bollocks at the best of times.
An
So, ripped right through the carcase of the tub in an impassive manor, annihilated a decent chain, and faced a long long walk/carry home.
well I managed to eat the cheesecake with a descent view, so not all bad :) -

^ nearly dropped my shopping.
to be honest, i'm hugely relieved that this happened as i was pootling home the couple of hundred yards from tescos at walking pace, rather than as i was belting down the south side of waterloo bridge as i'd been doing just minutes previously. it might just as easily have ended with me coming off face first at 30mph on a main road.
jesus obviously loves me.

though those bars do lok like they're made from alfoil.

started sanding a 22.2 stem to fit a 22 steerer - using quite fine grade sand paper was at it for hours until i thought i'd just give the stem a gentle tap in. ended up bashing it in at a wonky angle and it getting stuck fast. so i sawed the stem off and now have to saw the rest out of the steerer.
have posted a wanted add for some forks with a more reasonably sized steerer if anyone can help.

I hate it when that happens, you think you've just done enough, you can't wait any longer for a test fit, and then, pronto, your fucked.
Hope you find some easier forks! -

I am a fucking idiot.
Whilst rebuilding my sisters old shopper for the missus, I managed to thread the BB cups into the wrong sides thanks to my awesome strength and massive stubborness. The non drive is all the way in, after some swearing and plenty of slips of the spanner. The drive side is only half in, but I have destroyed the pin spanner getting it that far, as I popped an extender on there to get enough torque. I remembered they were a bugger to get out, so didn't consider that I was quite that much of a retard that I'd put them on the wrong fucking sides
I only realised what I had done after I had given up in a strop and thrown everything back in the shed.
I haven't owned up to it yet.

I'll probably buy a new pin spanner and try to reinstall the correct way round, and make sure I check on it every few days. There's a good chance it'll be fine. Otherwise, I'll get one of those, and a new crankset, but I'd rather not have to shell out any more than I already have.

That'll learn ya.

That must be shit, i always think tighten pedals toward the front of the bike, and bbs towards the rear, not fucked up yet.

I always look at the threads first, my fixed gear does have stripped threads (not by me) so use one of these although mine is 110mm which they don't seem to have in stock at the moment, works fine and has been in a couple of bikes now, need lots of grease and torque to stop it unscrewing itself!
My most annoying fuck up so far was done whilst changing gear cable on my roadie I managed to jam some cable inside the mechanism (on one of those fancy flappy paddle shimano brifter jobs) I was not best pleased!
Managed to redeem it after much Google-fu (here) and purchasing this (just asked my LBS to order me one)and lots of tea I was able to take it apart and rebuild it, very satisfying but the shifter was out of action for a month!

I managed to screw my STI lever when trying to shit between my front double. Chain got lodged yet i stubbornly continued trying to shift, something gave in the lever, now gear shifting doesn't work with it. I went for months without the use of the small chainring, i like to think my legs are now huge but i doubt it.....
send them a mail and explain what happened, worth a try. they may say you used too much torque but if it was a small wrech that would be difficult to do. I actually broke a dumbell/dog bone wrench in my hand one time, halfords brand. 1/3 snapped right off and I cut myself, not badly tho
