    Intervals early on may lead to injury also.

    Increasing from 3km to 5km seems completely sensible to me, in this case. If it is going to feel like a real struggle to step up, then do it gradually over a month - e.g. 3.5km, 4km, 4.5km, bingo.

    If you're finding it boring, pick a new route, run with company, ask yourself if running is really for you, or just htfu.
