It depends on how you want to lock your bike, and IF an alarm is the better solution for your situation.
Clefty's test shows that the Xena XZZ6 to be very capable. The padlock type alarm lock has its uses also.

the padlock alarm lock is better as you can lock it anywhere on the bike, it fit perfectly on my BMW Gangsta's downtube, the best thing about that is that if I were to arm it, I have to turn the U piece the other way round to do so, making it easier to carry without it going off (like the Xena);

I just realised that I haven't added a section for Alarm-Padlocks. I will do that and combine it with the alarm discklocks section of the list. If I have time, I'll do it tonight, if not, then by the weekend.

The battery life and extreme sensitivity of alarm locks has put me off. Gave mine away for a donation to the site because it was doing my swede in.

battery life is fine, I used it like 5 time a months for the last 3 months.

Abus Bordo Granit X-Plus link lock -
• #1062
franksterling, read this Abus Bordo Lock Review, then you will know why its NOT in the list on page one of this thread.
-
• #1063
hmm i see. would have been nice. carrying a huge lock is a big drawback.
-
• #1064
you soon get used to it though.
-
• #1065
Or carry them on the bike.
-
• #1066
I know this is sort of the opposite to the point of the thread, but what do you think the lightest/smallest lock you could get is?
It's just to lock a few bikes together outside a pub when me and my friends go on longer rides. Brighton is an obvious one, where you just want a way of stopping randoms walking off with it when you're not looking.
I was thinking about one of those neon bungee cord things, motorbike keys have plus a padlock. Any other suggestions?
As light and small as possible please.

The obvious choice is the Kryptonite Evolution Mini, or a motorcyclist d-lock designed for disc brake, the Evo Mini is pretty small and combine that with an alarm padlock, it's perfect (that what I carried on my road bike).
mount them on the bike, a lots of people tend not to because it look ugly, but it's the best and easiest way to carry a lock, especially the Evo Mini, and you won't feel the weight while riding, it's static weight.
the small d-lock can be locked via the seatstay/wheel, but then again depend on the bike really.

As promised, though better late than never, I've finally added an Alarm Padlocks sub-section to the list (page 1 of this thread).
The Karbrus is the original, and arguably, the best.
But there are also many cheaper priced copies, and of these, the Maplins' version seems very good. At only a tenner, its a cheap purchase that would suit anyone living in a shared property, especially if your bike has to live in the communal hallway.
I also found that Kabrus have an alarmed U-Lock, the XL303, which posseses a 17mm bar. At £45, its £20-£25 cheaper than the 18mm Xena XUL locks.

Does anyone know how heavy the 19mm Motrax Disclock Large is?
It must be over 3kgs, right?
-
• #1070
Can't find a weight for the Motrax, but yes, it is probably near the 3kgs mark. Similar locks weigh that, so its quite likely.
The Yale YUL2 is a lock I've just come across. I can't find it on sale anywhere though. The spec looks good, and the maker is a company that knows how to make a strong lock. If I find it on sale somewhere, I'll post it, and add it to the list.

Cheers for the reply. But I think you've misunderstood.
There is no way I'm carrying a d-lock to go on a nice long country ride. Especially not a kryptonite. But I think I've found a style that makes sense:
Small enough to fit in a jersey pocket or saddle pack. Combination lock, so other people can unlock it. Plus if I get one of the longer cables it will easily be able to wrap a few bikes to something.

I think your question was confusing. You ask for the least possible security in the thread that deals with the maximum possible security. Therefore the answer given by edscoble was appropriate within the confines of this thread's remit - he gave you a good example of the smallest of the best.
I actually think your post could have been in its own thread - The Least Possible Security. Then we'd follow your adventures in the Stolen Bikes thread. It's the way of the world I'm afraid.

• #1074
amazed that this thread can be 22 pages long. Just get a fag mini and a normal krypto mini and you're done.
-
• #1075
You're both right.
Saying "just get a Fahg Mini and an Evo Mini" is misleading, because people have different types of frame, different anchor objects, different ways of carrying their locks and different budgets.
However, the first post of the thread is all the information you need if you're simply after security – and frankly, what else is a lock for? Dan's correct in that respect.
The best thing to do is probably let people ask questions, point out what they need to consider and the consequences of not getting it right, then let them make their own mistakes if they want to tie their bikes up with a skipping rope.
C'mon lock guru, what alarmed disc lock has the LFGSS vote of confidence?
I have an under locked bike and a credit card below its limit!
