^Is there any reason why break cables are so long on that era of bikes?

i think i've read that its so they dont get in the way of your hands

Standard at Gazelle was 4 fingers between top of bars and brake cables.
At this bike, onle the fron cable looks too long.
The one for the rear brake should be moved a bit more backwards (bigger curve near the seatlug to avoid paint damage at the frame). Then it looks okay. -

It's because they exit from the top of the levers, and on any brake or gear cable you want as smooth a curve as possible for best performance. When aero levers came along the cables could then exit from the rear of the lever and along the curve of the handlebar, and keep a smooth line that way without them looping up into the air.

right, makes sense. Thanks for that!

It's a shame the gazelle frame is using a cheap Pletscher Plate seatstay bridge. Big points off for that or am I missing something?
-
• #31137
it's a "butterfly" brake bridge and everyone loves them!
-
• #31138
Pletscher seat stay bridge was used on (all?) Gazelle Randonneur frames and (some?) Semi Race frames with a reason: attachment of fenders, racks and ring locks.
Pletscher bridge should not be mixed up with butterfly bridge (race only).
Kind of bridge doesn't have so much to do with the price.
Appearance and practical reasons matter. -

http://www.alwaysriding.co.uk/campagnolo-raytech-thermo-txn-jacket-575.htmlProbably worth mentioning that the Campag Italian sizes are pretty miniscule. I tried a Large on today when I'd usually be a medium and it was tight! Ypu'd be worth trying on a Campag Small in a local shop before splashing out.
