  • blu-ray? what for?

  • Shut up, Ed...

    #lfgssgold

  • that's my plan, 13" for travel and a 24" at home

    specs here as well now

    http://www.macrumors.com/

I quite like the idea of this plan actually.

I've got my macbook running with this set up at the moment but would probably upgrade to a pro in a few years. Don't need to yet as mine is fine.

  • blu-ray? what for?

25GB of storage in one disc would be quite nice, especially for back-up.

  • USB terrabyte drives are nicer.

  • I have a firewire 800 4Tb external drive. Cost £140.

I would rather have that than have to piss about with Blu-ray any day.

  • Soul, where did you get that drive and what is it? I need a big external to back up stuff from the desktop and thought I'd have to piss hundreds away to get something with that much storage capacity.

ps. I'm still looking for the specs onmy working 12" G4 powerbook, and will get it to you as soon as I can find the damn thing, should have them by the weekend..

  • I lied a little ... it's 3TB not 4TB (could have sworn it was 4!!):

Drive is the Seagate GoFlex 3TB: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 3TB Desktop USB 2.0 External Hard Drive with Capacity Gauge: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

I bought mine with the FW 800 base: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desktop Adapter (USB 2.0,Firewire 800): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

I picked mine up when i was in the US in December but it's not far off that price in the UK

  • Just re-read my post and 1/3 of the capacity is more than a little lie :-s ... still 3TB for £140 is still a bargain

  • thinking about getting this, for no other reason than I'm not a great big fan of usb, prefer FW, faster and more robust...

    seems like a good price

  • Not many machines have FW these days (Do Macs still have it? Mine is a hackintosh), and I've always found it a lot less reliable than USB2 on Windows boxes. A lot of my studio gear is FW and it's very fussy about the actual FW chipset, is not hot-pluggable and sometimes just stops working for no reason.

  • but you can hook up hdd to hdd to hdd to computer, less cable mess

  • yeah mac's are still FW.

Anyone had any joy with Network Access Storage, thinking about getting one of those to store everything on, and just streaming stiff to whichever machine I'm on at the time.

  • Well, not Firewire in the sense of those old one, but they kept changing the design of the firewire port which is really annoying.

End up needing an USB > Firewire convertor so I can sync my iPod (it's that old).

  • I would only get NAS storage if you've got multiple machines that need to access is.

I used to have one for storing disc images and installers. It cost a fortune, and was slow as fuck. Ended up using eSATA's and FW drives. Saved me about an hour a day probably.

In fairness, that was for massive files and such, if it was for streaming MP3's and back up's it would probably do the job.

if you're pulling video streams Corni, I'd get a FW 800 drive. Still knocks the socks off of USB.

All my harddrives and Audio gear is FW. The chipset can burn out if you're an idiot about it, but then i've also had hard drives constantly on and connected and the drive went before the FW chip did.

there are only 3 different configurations as far as I'm aware, 4 pin and 6 pin firewire 400, and 9 pin firewire 800. surely your ipod would have been the 6 pin as the 4 pin doesn't provide any power?
6 pin to 9 pin cables are cheap and readily available..

I still think firewire makes much more sense than usb for high bandwidth situations.

I've got one of these and it works a treat - it's hidden away in the cupboard with the wireless router.

and i have a few of these in the studio - these come with usb and firewire.

  • ^ is that NAS thing quick enough to watch movies from? Can i hook up other drives to it as well? Will it do time machine?

    questions questions questions!

    questions questions questions!

    yep, yep and yep

  • thank you thank you thank you!

  • 25GB of storage in one disc would be quite nice, especially for back-up.

plus being able to watch blueray films as well i assume?

  • now you've popped a hand up to say yay marco, what about this one..

Western Digital 4TB ShareSpace Network Storage System 4-bay GigE,NAS & RAID: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

I should just say this is just for storing movies and music on, and backing up info, but since I'm now freelance and working on final cut pro, I'd like to archive the trails and projects I'm going to be doing so I can go back and re-edit if required. And this (or something like it) plus big drives in the desktop seems to be the solution methinks..

  • Ended up using eSATA's and FW drives. Saved me about an hour a day probably.

Ooh I forgot about eSata. How does that stack up in cost/speed/availability on the new macbook?

My current 1TB Buffalo HD is both USB2 and FW. Doesn't allow you to connect it to both a mac and a windows box though :-)

  • plus being able to watch blueray films as well i assume?

    attaboy.

  • Has anyone used Apple TV? Im thinking about buying one to stream my music from may Macbook to my stereo. Just wanted to know if was any good.
