Wow this has really opened up my eyes, I too was mislead to believe skinnier tyres are faster. The experiences I have with them must be a combination of placebo and imagination. I will go out and buy Fat Franks in the morning, I'll be so fast!
That article lost all its credibility in one line. Maybe they should focus more on factual information and less on controversy or having some kind of scoop. Not any tyre that's 1mm skinnier than any other is necessarily faster, but if the opposite is true like the article says, why don't they ride fat tyres in the Tour?
