I got hit yesterday, i'm ok. had a good witness to the driver agreeing to exchange details but then driving off. reported to the police, got a bike report done.
been told now to wait it out and go through the process of it or call motor insurance bureau, find out drivers insurance company, ring them directly and tell them the situation and that I want to claim for a new bike.
this is useful too to find out if the driver is insured or not:
http://ownvehicle.askmid.com/Update on this:
Turns out the driver was uninsured/not the registered driver, as the car is registered to a male and I was hit by a female (with kids in the back). The MIB (motor insurer's bureau not men in black) told me because details were not obtained from the driver (she drove off) it classes as an 'untraced case' rather than a 'uninsured case' and take a £300 fee if successful, which is most of what I was claiming for. awesome...

Are you going to drop it? Not sure I follow... the £300 would come from her/his side wouldn't it?
The way I see it, you claim for say £500 for a replacement bike, they get billed £800 for that £500 plus the £300 MIB fee, plus hopefully a fine for driving illegally. -

They probably get a driving ban. Fucking uninsured cunts.

If however the named driver admits it was his wife/sister/friend, etc then it becomes a 'uninsured' case which the other party would then have to pay the £300 to MIB. Still going to go ahead with it, as if its unsuccessful they wont charge me the £300.
Still waiting to hear from the police.
Moral of the story; make sure you get the drivers details.

^ surely it's a case of both 'untraced' and 'uninsured' which the police should be investigating. Don't listen to insurance companies they'll do anything avoid a payout. Chase it up though the po po.

Just spoke to both MIB and popo. MIB say they have a time limit of when they hear from the police. When I rang the police they told me they've allocated my case to an officer whos on holiday for 3 weeks (good work guys!). MIB want to give me a pay out for the bike claim minus £300 and said they'll re-open the case later if popo get anywhere with their investigations (and pay me the £300).
Apparently if they question the named driver and he denies all knowledge the popo cant do anything (even though I have good witness). I'll be chasing this up when that officer comes off holiday.

new update: popo have pulled their finger out and are persuing the named driver about his car being involved in the 'hit and run'.
In other news had a near hit this morning. Was in the left lane at the give way waiting to turn right onto edward road and a taxi driver driving at like 20mph almost ploughed into me as he turned right into the road (from the left of me).
Almost had a head on collision because he was trying to cut the corner through my lane! pretty scary wake up call...

I lost my temper with some suit in a huge Audi fuckwit-wagon that did that to me once, he was texting and turned badly into a side road just off Broad St in a hurry straight into me, he stopped just in time and I stood my ground, asked him if he was stupid or trying to kill me, reminded him that in a bump he'd get scratched paint whereas I'd get put in a box. He apologized profusely and tried to play the 'I ride a bike too' card. That made me so much madder I just rode off, it's no defence to say you ride a bike, he wasn't on a bike, he was in a huge SUV texting his mates...
Good news on the cops, hope they get something to go on.

What is it with drivers this morning. On a 5 min ride I got honked at twice and given the wanker sign! I wasn't even riding that aggressively. Maybe it's the wind...

You're probably just noticing it more, they're always shit but sometimes it's easier to blank them out and sometimes they just seem to be everywhere, you're a good cyclist, ignore them, they're idiots

Draft them, chase them, then give it back....

I was once given the wanker sign by someone driving in the opposite direction on a straight road. Some people just have a chip on their shoulder about cyclists....

They are honking because you are awesome. Give them a smile and a wave or a "call me" hand signal.

I'm not annoyed by it, just can't understand why many drivers have poor spacial awareness and think I'm going to damage their vehicle. I suppose awareness is something you have or you don't. A lot of the times people make a fuss seems to be when I pull in after passing them down the outside. I know exactly where the back of my bike is, but they have no idea where the bumper of their car is!

I want to carry a paint gouger on some sort of quick release system for inconsiderate Birmingham road using pricks. On the top bar ideally, a quick whip off and fuck a panel up on their car. was thinking that or one of them emergency window breaking hammers, for like if you drive your car into a river. Someone cuts you up - bosh - no more driver's side front window.
Will need to plot my escape sharpish though....

^ probably best to keep that hush.
FFS. Had a 'near miss' this morning as some moronic woman undertook me in a layby (bus stops outside New St station) then forced me to swerve into the middle of the road as she cut me up.
That was such a fucked up manouevre I really had to catch up with her. Saying no more than that except she probably doesn't even realise she's done anything wrong.
