I'm in the market for a GPS, but ideally one that will just track where I've been. I don't really need one to navigate by, directions written on scraps of paper, or other people's knowledge will suffice for the time being. So, does such a product exist, and are they substantially cheaper than one that will allow me to navigate (give maps, directions etc)?

Garmin Edge 500 does this, for about £150. It has the virtues of being compact, plug-and-play, and easy to sell on to other cyclists if you decide you need something more/different later.
