Someone walked past me and some club mates outside Cafe St Germain with their blue fixed (sorry didn't get a close look) and said "no gears".

I'm interested in the context of that phrase. I imagine that it was either an explanation for walking it up Anerly Hill or conversely an expression of your pride for riding it up with no gears.
You were wearing sunglasses on an overcast february afternoon, so you might have been stoned and just realised: "shit my bike's got no gears".
